How can I make cheap, attractive, homemade snake substrate for my ball python?
The only thing I have on-hand all the time is cedar chips (used for chickens) and I know it's very toxic to all snakes, so that's out of the question. I've heard of people using newspapers and paper towels, but those are extremely unattractive ha ha
What I'm looking for is a way to MAKE floor substrate for my ball python, Tage. All of the beddings in the pet stores are usually way to expensive (I'm on a pretty tight budget) and come is such small packages that it would be expensive to buy as much as I need.
Tage is in a home-made cage, the floor space is somewhere between 8-12 sq ft.
If anybody has any suggestions, or a way to make some kind of natural mixture that would hold humidity and be ok for my snake, let me know! I live in the high desert, and we have a lot of sandy dirt, leaves, pine needles, and grass.
Home & garden stores a great places. Cypress(no die) mulch works great. You can get fairly large bags at Lowe's for about $2-$4, comparative bags are about $25 at pet stores. You can some times get coconut fiber there, and cheaper than pet stores as well.
I haven't used this but some thing you can try, it supposedly hold humidity well.
Anthony Caponetto's Mixture.
This mixture roughly 50% coconut fiber, 40% sphagnum peat and 10% play sand. The sphagnum peat and play sand are extremely cheap and can be found at any local home & garden store.
