How safe are muskets in a holiday home?
I have some real old-style black powder muskets hanging on the wall of a holiday home for decoration. Are bolted to the wall with brackets, because I do not want people to strip down and play with them cos they are real. No one in the house for weeks or months at a time. I wonder if this is a major risk for people who want to steal, or not really? I wonder if I should leave or take down. The house is not completely isolated in its somewhat of a community resource with a few thousand people. There is an alarm system in the house, also a maid service clean the place every two weeks. I was also thinking about getting some cowboy firearms or weapons World War 2 maybe to put on the wall too, but I'm not sure. The mechanism Shooting of the guns were disabled, but still real weapons. But SCHMOOZIN good point.
I have made myself a cabin that my family had in a remote location. We only visited once every two months ... then more often during the hunting season. Unlike you, I never even bothered for the bolts on the wall. Just built a wooden supports good to hang overtop flintlock in the mantle. In 10 years, we have never had a problem. The only thing I recommend is this. Take a cotton ball, like what can come out of a bottle of pills of aspirin or other, and use some black shoe dye in it, to stain black. Then carefully place the tip of the muzzle of the gun to create a barrier. Why? Because spiders love to make their nests inside the barrels of those things.
