Log cabin personality ... and other household names
The English language is really different, so much so that it has adapted a lot foreign language and passed it off as their own. Adjust the pronunciation a bit, add a vowel here and there, and voila, a new English word is born.
Who would have thought that a word like "boondocks," which denotes a rough country or backwoods, actually came from the bundok Filipino word that literally means "mountain? And what about the word "gaga" now has come to symbolize a fashion trend? It was originally a French term that literally means old fool. A lot of Arabic words have also been streamlined and have been in daily use, such as "Sponge", "Kismet" and "encryption." Spanish words also have an excellent use in the English language, while a seating area outside is now formally called "patio", and a canteen in a school building or office is commonly called a "cafeteria" which literally means coffee. And you think that vanilla, which is the most popular flavor of ice cream, actually came from the Spanish word "vanilla" which literally means little pod?
What about those words often heard? To say that a person is "in the doghouse" wanted say that he is in trouble, and say that a person lives in a "house" or a "chicken" meant that it is cowardly and weak. When someone says she came from "the neighborhood", which denotes a person falling rough and prone to violence, therefore, most people away from them, as it could get into a fight. If someone said that was just released from "cuckoo nest" the meant that recently emerged from a mental center or rehabilitation center. A "Journey to the past" means that someone is being nostalgic about his past, and a "trip to LaLa Land" with the intent to go to sleep or try to do something largest in Hollywood. The term "Excuse my French" does not mean that he is to pronounce a French word, but implies that a layman is expressing.
Politicians have also made good use of such terms. As a recording "booth" personality means that the individual is simple and unpretentious, yet steady and reliable.
