AUA Donyo founder Ol 'Richard Bonham had flown often on this spectacular landscape, but one day in the late 1980, was moved to land his Cessna in the open plains and meet the local Maasai. That was just the first of many meetings before the birth of a draft community tourism pioneer conservation. The concept was simple: Richard takes visitors to this remote group ranch to participate in safaris, and the share of the Masai benefits. But nothing in Africa is so simple, really. And so began an ongoing relationship with the Masai, wildlife and property.

Today, after years of working together in a partnership through which both wildlife and the benefit of the population, there are elephants in front of the room almost every day. In fact, with six bulls some of the largest ivory in Africa East are regular visitors. Lion and cheetah, which were always present in small amounts, are rising much less elusive. In a world where Black rhino was shot last close to extinction, Mbirikani Maasai Group Ranch and protect a secure breeding population deep in the cloud forests of the hills Chyulu.

When developing the wildlife, the people prosper
It was agreed that although progress is being made, the hotel needs a fresh injection of investment, activities and conservation initiatives. And so, the Great Plains joined family, along with Richard and Tara, to initiate new opportunities for the benefit of the Maasai and wildlife. This will not be without its challenges, looking at the pressures facing the people and land. The population is expanding and in turn so is agriculture. The pressures on wildlife conservation and have never been so acute. Recognize need to adapt and evolve, while working with both Mbirikani Maasai Group Ranch and surrounding ranches group to forge new partnerships and innovative thinking. Is intention and the work that by building a sustainable model for conservation and tourism, we will raise our neighboring communities and protect wildlife in the region.
