My travels through the Garden Route, South Africa
On arrival in Oudtshoorn about 5 ½ hours (430 kilometers) later, I checked Thorntree Lodge in the beautiful 12 km outside of Oudtshoorn on the road to the Cango Caves. Luis, the owner of the cottage, I received a warm welcome and then I checked into my cozy luxury home in the rose garden. Took some time to cool off and then headed out for some adventure. Cango Caves was a departure more than 17 km from Oudtshoorn and 90 minutes I decided to join guided adventure tour to take through the depths of the caves of world renown. caverns of stalactites, extensive rooms and large formations of stalagmites and stalactites fascinated me. The tour took us through a narrowing moist chamber where the air was heavy and nerves began churning. The hall we were forced to a crawl that we go through "the tunnel of love." We ended up in the stomach head first to crawl through "The Mailbox demons "only 45 cm in height only to leave in the large chamber, which eventually will lead to warm sunlight. With the cave dirt on me I returned to the hostel for a quick shower and then drinks before dinner in the tavern welcoming open fire and a fantastic dinner at the lodges.
The next day after breakfast I tried my hand at riding an ostrich. The Cango Ostrich Farm in the same street in Thorntree Lodge is a great place to experience driving ostrich and learn everything about the industry of ostrich farming, which made Oudtshoorn famous. My trip was entertaining to say the least and the fulfillment of special family a very friendly female ostrich called Betsie, was a pleasure!
It was another beautiful sunny day in the Little Karoo. A perfect day for a ride Widescreen. From ostrich farm I went up and over the Swartberg pass enjoy magnificent views of the little Karoo and continued through the picturesque town of Prince Albert and then through the throat Meiringspoort impressive. In a cascade, which enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch full of goodness for me on Thorntree Lodge. cliffs with fascinating sandstone formations around me. A 25 km of paved road winds along the valley floor, crossing the Groot River 25 times. Each crossing, or drift, has its own name and history and this is depicted on a plaque at the site for information of the waterfall. After spending time exploring the area, continued through De Rust and returned to Thorntree for the evening. Dinner is enjoyed in a small popular restaurant in town called Jemima.
After packing my stuff and say goodbye to me all the Thorntree, went to the Cango Wildlife Ranch, a wildlife sanctuary and breeding center for endangered species extinction - a fascinating stop recommended for everyone. They offer a very informative tour of the ranch (45 min to 1 hour) where you can see and learn about crocodiles, alligators, tigers, jaguars, lions and cheetahs. The Cheetah Research sanctuary offers a cheetah encounter program, which allows one to play the Cheetahs. It is an experience humiliating to these amazing animals. After my encounter with the Cheetahs, took a quick look at his snake farm before leaving to the Garden Route Oudtshoorn.
I rode the beautiful Outeniqua Mountains in George then along the coast beyond the desert and lakes in the picturesque village of Knysna (about 125 km and 1h40 minutes by car). I drove up the coastline popular little Spring to find something to eat and stopped at 30 degrees South for a delicious seafood platter. After a walk along the shore I went to another amazing hostel located in the hill looking over the Knysna lagoon through Belvidere Estate and mountains Outeniqua in the distance. Elephant Hide Lodge is one of my favorites, their beautiful luxury suites encourage all views. Utermark family welcomed me in and made me feel at home. Ryan, his brother Craig and good friend Mark took me out to dinner at an Italian restaurant called Mama Persello and then proceeded to visit Knysna nightlife. Knysna is rich in excellent restaurants, but not so great when it comes to nightlife - pubs with live music and entertainment. It happened to be a good night of the week and we find some entertainment to local Harry B with some good dance music playing. Much fun was had!
The next day I Knysna discover! I joined a 4-hour Eco-Experience of Featherbed Nature Reserve, a South African World Heritage Site. This included a ferry trip back through of the Knysna lagoon, a nature drive and guided walk through the reserve ended with a delicious lunch buffet in the Forest restaurant. Your guide onboard local share fascinating stories about the lake, the shipping industry and oyster farming principles. Plumas Nature Reserve is home to a breeding program of the rare Blue Duiker - one of the smaller antelope species in the world - the beautiful Knysna Loerie Knysna and danger Sea Horse. Visitors have the unique opportunity to see these creatures in the Reserve. The shuttle returned home early in the afternoon.
More fun and adventure would be had today! The Garden Route is known for its beautiful forests and native vegetation, spectacular coastal fynbos. It is imperative to go out and enjoy it! My afternoon was spent ATV through the Featherbed Nature Reserve - a bit of adrenaline mixed with stunning views. I totally enjoyed it!
Back in the hostel, I was preparing for another night of partying with Utermark brothers and friends. Dinner is enjoyed on a first-class restaurant called Sirocco Thesens Island. Good food magnificent views and good service was enjoyed by all!
Comfortable and warm in my cozy bed, waking me plan my day. After my choice of a healthy breakfast of muesli best city, topped with tasty Greek yogurt drizzled with honey, I went to the Nature Reserve near Plettenberg Robberg Bay to enjoy a walk of 2 hours. The peninsula is covered with fynbos vegetation Robberg the rich and increases spectacular sea views and beach through Robben to Plettenberg Bay 8 miles away. Birds are very good and you have the opportunity to see a colony of sea lions large.
It is not a lots of things to do in this area that I fought for the election. After my walk, I settled for lunch at a popular restaurant overlooking the Valley Bitou River. Emily is beautiful Luna Lodge with 8 separate private suites decorated in contemporary African style. The same style that flows through your lovely restaurant to die for! After a lunch on the deck above, which continued until the Elephant Sanctuary out in the cliffs where they enjoyed the interaction with a family 6-well cared for African elephants. Oriented program took me an hour of a "stock on hand" walk with the Ellies followed by an elephant ride of about 15 minutes always accompanied by experienced trainers and a qualified guide who constantly shared interesting facts, his passion for Ellies obvious - an experience I recommend any person of any age!
Monkeyland and Birds of Eden are right Next to the Elephant Sanctuary and well worth a visit. Monkeyland is the world's first free-roaming primate sanctuary of multi-species. Is an enclosed area about 26 indigenous forest size rugby fields and has numerous primate species around the world. Accompanied by an experienced ranger qualified, I joined an informative 1-hour tour through the sanctuary.
Birds of Eden is the largest free-flight aviary in the world and is home to about 150 species from around the world. After buying a ticket brochure's list of species of birds, which then traveled around the aviary in the wooden walkways that are raised through a canopy of native forest. A tea garden in a small lake was attractive, so he sat down for a cup of tea while watching swans and ducks all sails peacefully beside me.
It was a busy day for me, and I expected a little quiet time. Just across the valley Monkeyland was my stop overnight. Pork personal Hollow Country Lodge I was greeted with joy at my arrival and my visit to my luxury suite with private terrace and stunning views across a valley of dense forest, the Outeniqua Mountains in the distance. Peace and quiet! Aaah!
drinks before dinner is served around 19.00 out on the main deck around a large fire carbon and a magnificent five-course dinner served from 19h30. All the guests sat on the table and had a chance to meet and talk about their days activities. Each course is served delicious, tempting our taste buds! Retired to my room welcomed me back to a heated room, with a history of time bed to read, my bed turned down and a little chocolate with a note saying "Good evening, I see you in the morning." This left a smile on my face!
After a good night's sleep, I joined the breakfast table and I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of things in the cold buffet. We even had champagne on the table! I did not even get to the hot breakfast! I looked forward to another night in the hollow of the pig.
Reserved for cruise at 09h30, but rough seas canceled. It was a shame! It would have been ideal to enjoy a few encounters with dolphins in the bay. Anyway, I enjoyed a scenic route along the road passes through old natures along the R102 Valley to Tsitsikamma National Park. The path winds gently through dense indigenous forest cover deep gorges and steep mountain slopes. Storms River mouth in Tsitsikamma offers wild seas and a rocky coast spectacular. I took at trip to the waterfall in the first section of the famous 5 days Otter path that starts at Storms River Mouth. The waterfall falls into a beautiful large pool Coke's water color before falling away in the sea. There was a cold wind blowing from the sea and a storm that had no bathroom for me today. I walked the coast of the elusive Otter Clawless Cape endemic to this area but is currently hidden. After enjoying some fresh sea air and some exercise returned to my car to return to my country house. Along the way, I stopped at the bridge on the N2 Bloukrans to see some extreme adrenaline junkies are dropped from the bridge! Bloukrans Bridge offers bungi the highest waterfall in the world in 216m. Her screams said it all and made me feel happy to be standing where I was seeing.
Hog Hollow offered this night a different menu, but only delicious! Another great night was enjoyed.
After an early breakfast set off on my long journey back to Cape Town (approx. 6 hours). The work is called and my holiday was over!
