I have a question about natural wood flooring and white trim.?
I'm designing my dream home and I like going for the natural look. I would love natural colored wooden floors, but I also want natural wood trim and moldings. The problem I'm having is if it would look too weird having all the brown color. I'm not relly a big fan of all the white trim, it's too bright for me. Can I have all these natural woods together without it looking too brown or Log Cabin-ish?
You could create a contrast between the floor & the trim by using different stains. Even if you were planing on not staining the floor or trim, a natural stain should still be used to bring out the natural beauty of the grains. you could also vary the types of wood used, ex. a cherry wood floor would be a reddish color while pine trim would be very light in color. Regardless of which woods you decide to use, don't use pine for your flooring, it's much too soft, but it's great for trim. Also, all the wood will have to be finnished with a varathaine or a simular product (Minwax has a complete selection and is a good product, I know from experience). To get the most from your wood finnish, use a high gloss finnish for the first two coats and on the third coat ( to get proffesional quality end result, 3 coats of finnish is mandatory) you can use the high gloss or change to semi-gloss or satin, depending on the effect you wish to create.
