Lapland in May, now all the snow has gone
Lapland in May sees the very sad end to the skiing season but on the plus side sees the arrival of summer and 24 hour light in Lapland, known as the midnight sun. The open grasslands of Lapland are covered in berries, some of them sacred berries, such as the cloudberry which is found growing naturally in Lapland and used in many of Lapland's finest foods. Wild mushrooms and wild herbs are some of the other free growing plants up on the hillsides. The temperature this time of year is on average 9 degrees and getting warmer as the days go on. The summer temperatures are very similar to the U.K and it might surprise some people to know that Lapland is a very fine place to holiday in the summer. The cabins are an ideal place to really relax and enjoy the peace and tranquilities Lapland has to offer. It is a stark contrast to have the doors wide open in the summer months and let in the warm breeze as opposed to the door tightly shut in the winter to keep out the very chilly temperatures. The remainder of the snow is hanging on in there up on the slopes but down in the village of Yllas there is no sign to remind us of the chilly winter weather. Skiing is over unfortunately but this opens the door for all of the summer activities which are just as popular as the winter ones. The people of Lapland get just as excited about summer activities and the buzzing of village life as they do in the winter months. What summer time gives you the chance to do is to really get to see Lapland for all its beauty. In the winter months, the activities will keep you busy and the weather is far too cold to do an awful lot of walking but in the summer, especially with the 24 hour light, it is an ideal time to get out there and sample what Lapland has to offer. It isn't unusual for the locals to finish work and head for the hills. Lapland is a real family orientated country who believes in the outdoors and spending time with the family and spend time with the family they do, in both the winter and summer months.
