Regarding Log Cabins, why are the vertical surfaces made flat?
It seems to me that making the wall surfaces flat was a great deal of work for not much return. One could argue that this made the interior walls nicer, but what would be the advantage of making the exterior walls flat?
On the outside it helps shed the rain better. But I like the traditional look best. Inside the flat profile is more convenient for attaching things like cabinets and partition walls.

Perhaps you are not familiar with the militia movements of the 1980's and 1990's. Even the "Uni-bomber" could have been described as a "bearded survivalist" during that era, the only difference being that he came out of his cabin and the woods periodically to wreak havoc. All of these people were anti-government, and most were anarchists. Primarily, the militias moved into remote areas to avoid paying taxes and any other interaction with the various government entities in their respective states.
The reference to beans and ammunition is two fold. First, beans dried properly or canned can last an inordinantly amount of time in an cool environment lacking humidity. Rifles and shotguns with ample ammunition combined with a few fishing poles will allow a large group of people to survive indefinitely in a "wilderness" area without detection. Such a life would be ideal for those looking to live undisturbed by the outside world for a lifetime. Second, the areas chosen by these survivalists were well known as easily defensible positions. I believe the quote is referencing a group of people who ferverently believe that our current economic situation and chaotic form of government has put the United States in a position that will be seen by certain other countries as ripe for invasion and take over. As shown in the movie "Red Dawn", it would be possible to hold out an survive deep in the woods for years while the invading forces concentrated on over powering our population centers. Survivalists are one of the last remaining remnants of the "Cold War". The beard only represents the man's freedom to make his own decisions and define his own standards of normal.
