Decoration ... Smokey Mountain tradition
Shopping
In small towns across of the Smokey Mountains of western North Carolina, large extended families are often connected to specific cemeteries dating back generations. During the summer months, each of these cemeteries is home to a "decoration" where members of the family return to honor their ancestors.
My family comes the mountains of western North Carolina. About 10-15 miles from the Cherokee Reservation is the town of Bryson City. If you are looking for a mountain vacation, that's all.
The website listed as "one of the best whitewater. Peoples rowing" I do not know about that child because he did nothing; piped by Deep Creek instead. That tourists are rafting on the Nantahala River. pipe is very fun and much less work. Of course, tourists do not go home with rifle bruises. We did.
Bryson City is the home of Smokey Mountain National Park, Fontana Lake, great fishing biking and hiking trails, and a good part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are no four-star hotels, but the city has a number of highly qualified and bed breakfast inns. Personally, I'm happy with several of the motels lining renewed the Nantahala on US-19 between Cherokee and Bryson.
Just above the city are a number of paths that take you to a mountain or two. These roads are not for the weak heart. Veer slightly to the left is the mountain. Veer a bit to the right, and you plunge into the mountains So little by little. Live longer and less you are the driver, close your eyes ..
In the south, are called 'scream'.
As you drive, you will see a lot of roads leading to the main road a small valley or head buried in the mountain area. It is the cry. I know the word is written 'hole' but anyone I've known in the state of North Carolina called so. 'Hollow' sounds like something in New England. In the south we have cries out of his dictionary vocabulary and phonetically correct in the rest stop on the outskirts of the city.
My grandparents, Will and Jane Edna, lived in one of these cries. The next cry in belonged to his brother. I think their address as "Will and Toogas Howard Howard Holler Holler." Yes he really called Toogas. (According to my sister his real name was sloppy, but I can not confirm that.)
I remember the days sitting in the stands listening to the two of them in the jaw or something another, never tried to be funny;. in fact I think they were trying to "capricious" (You get that too), but never stopped two men having fun old could turn a story that we are in tears. And never a smile. Not even have to be a story that could be a conversation on a rock is still would be hysterical ..
Once when I was older, I spent an evening with Will at Christmas. He will help me slop the pigs. If you question ... It is not always necessary to repeat that experience ... simply marked off my "I have to do before I die" list. He also mocked my city roads and a weak stomach. However, my aunt told me later that he said "it makes some sense to her."
The man did not give much praise for what he wrote that down.
The family event that I am interest than any other, which brings me back to Bryson City each year, is the decor.
Bryson City, like many cities and towns in this area has a few families are an important part of the population Ours was one of them Each family has its own cemetery .. supervised by a nearby church and generally populated by the ancestors of the family. During the summer months, each of these cemeteries is home to a "decoration."
Church generally is suspended for the day as the preacher and many believers have fallen into the cemetery. People carry the trunk loads of artificial flowers and wreaths. Some might bring plants Live and flowers, but last longer false. And most of these flowers do not fall into the vases. They are glued directly on the ground. Because the issue is not spending a fortune. Is to respect our ancestors.
My favorites are wreaths of flowers that come in unusual ways. You just can not win a crown full of plastic flowers and shaped guitar ... or the head of Elvis.
My sister and I walk by people meeting that almost but not quite, remember from previous years. As the old I'm surprised how much they all look alike. And yet, people still choose me as someone who 'belongs' to my father or grandmother. And during the pilgrimage and socialization, we are all hitting the flowers on the ground around the graves.
At ten o'clock, began preaching under the big oak in the center the cemetery. I could have called a sermon, but that word does not feel right. Catholics have mass, Lutherans and Methodists have sermons, we are always preaching There is a small group to make some hymns accompanied by the guitar ..
Our cemetery was founded by my great (3 large, in fact) grandfather Abraham Wiggins, in late 1800. wife died in mid-winter and could not get the body of the mountain for a funeral and she was buried in the church. He was the preacher at the Laurel Branch Baptist and began what would become the graveyard of Laurel Branch. I am very glad he did.
The decor is an opportunity to connect with their ancestors.
Even as a child, I remember my father dragged me from tomb to tomb. In each of them told us a little about the residents. Sometimes it was the history or lineage of the person, and sometimes it was a story that had been transmitted by them. But he always made sure he realized that was once a real person and not just a name on a tombstone.
It could have been a joke, but knowing his personality, I would not bet on it.
As a child, I get very bored about an hour at the event. As an adult, I want to last all week. There are two things I always seem.
A ... I feel connected here. There is something about spending time with a few hundred people (living and dead) who share their DNA.
And two ... The sheer beauty of the place just grabs me. trees they have hundreds of years old and shoot up into the sky. The lakes and rivers and streams that have not yet fulfilled pollution. And cost views million in other, more populated location.
The cemetery overlooks it all. The views are spectacular.
Not a bad place to spend eternity.
