How can I make my gourami more comfortable?
Hi guys, I have 4 corydoras in a 20 gallon moderately artificially planted tank. I added a gold gourami to the tank yesterday as the only real "fish" for the life of the tank. I planned this because I wanted only one centerpiece fish, and since they only reach around 5-6 inches, I figured he'd be perfect for the tank. Anyway, ammona and nitrites and nitrates are zero and he seems very hestitant to come out of the driftwood log he's hiding in. If I'm not in the room I'll peer in and he is swimming around, but the minute I come in he just stares out of the log at me like he's afraid I'm gonna hurt him. He's a really beautiful fish and I want him to feel comfortable in his new home. What can I do to show him I'm not gonna hurt him??? Thanks!
I can't get another gourami because they are extremely territorial. I'll try subduing the lights tho.
I can't add any more fish either because the 4 emerald green cories (brochis splendens) and the gold gourami are pushing it as it is.
Mostly Time, you could try giving him a few more places he can be partially hidden but not completely gone, but the best thing too do would probaly be to leave the tank alone as much as possible for a few days (5-7), just feed them, otherwise pretend its not even there, then slowly work back to your regular maintanence schedule, other then that its just a matter of time and maturity of the fish. I had A Jaguar Cichlid who would only come out of his rock to eat when no one was in the room, As he got older he got much more used to his surroundings, and now comes right to the glass when I enter the room.
