Johnny Appleseed tree

50 years ago, a student on a field trip visited a farm in Jeromesville, Ohio, gave a cut, and asked a neighbor to graft a new tree. The neighbor, now elderly, still has the tree in his backyard in Brunswick, Ohio. From apples trees were used Chapman by settlers mostly to make cider, fresh consumption as it was not the highest priority. However, the history of this tree makes it a wonderful living legend. Zones 4-9.

LAST TREE OF REMAINING Johnny Appleseed

The roots of dying from a gnarled old apple tree in the diet of Ashland County in the goodies of the first legends Ohio.

Johnny Appleseed been there, the story, perhaps 140 years ago. It took nine seeds of his buckskin bag and planted them for his friend, Conrad Fridline, someday could have an apple orchard. Conrad grandson Fridline Alonso, who still lives on the farm, where he was born 81 years ago, can remember seven trees in the garden of Johnny Appleseed.

Today it is still struggling to live, half of the dead, his body rotted, but the half-life in a flame flower pink and white, as if the world was still young and this May were the first in place of perhaps the last.

PLANTED Millions of them

Carl W. Ellenwood, pomologist retreated to the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station believes the tree to be not only a plantation Johnny Appleseed, but the last of the millions, literally, that the eccentric tramp planted along streams and roads were young Indians in Ohio.
Ellenwood, impregnated 50-year tradition of apple, much has been made a hobby of running through the stories of Johnny Chapman, aka Appleseed. He is confident enough about the origin of the old tree that visits from time to time in a spirit of worship.

"It feels similar to that when you visit a shrine National: he said "no commercial importance, but somehow I'm always happy to hear that has come through another year."
Apple quality and culture, which Ellenwood has devoted a lifetime, were the least of concerns Johnny Appleseeds. He would be a clear place in the woods or a grassy bank, the fall indescribable some seeds and maybe not go through the next year to see what had sprouted. It was enough to think of forests were burned with flowers, and some drop laden with fruit.

Growth of a good apple from seed is almost a one in a million possibilities and legends Johnny Appleseeds have not ever planted an increasing value.
But the history of Ohio for students and their parents is much richer than apples in the history of the nebula mystic without home roamed unmolested by the Indians, he became friends with here and there by whites, preaching his Swedenborgian faith to all who hear, tearing pages your Bible to give their listeners remorse because once killed a snake, eating at a table of men ... but never sleep under his roof.

The old tree is in a rural scenic setting 15 miles west of Wooster between Route 250 and 30. Alonso Fridline sold his farm two years ago tenants long ( Funks Roy, who is watching out for both the old trees and the old farmer with care.)

The garden was a point Fridline Johnny Appleseed should have known and their Bible. The farm straddles the divide between Muddy Fork Creek and the Mohawk River, and a hint of India took the same beyond the old wooden hut that was home to Conrad Fridline. Indian mounds and burial have not been found on the farm.

Johnny Appleseed prepared in Marietta, rowing its way into the Muskingum to the mohican Walhonding to the north of Sandusky.

The garden Fridline could have been planted in or around 1821, when Conrad bought the estate of a Yankee Smith, but no later than 1837 when Johnny made his last trip to Ohio. Conrad's son, Ludwig, was then 16 years and is able to gather stories first hand to go to his son, Alonso.

More feeling of good apples are harvested from the old orchard.
"Of the seven trees remember only two came to nothing, and one was so poor an apple, and that could very well, "said Alonzo Fridline.

Ellenwood rates the latest fruit Survivor and fair. It is an attractive red apple maturing in mid-September. The trunk is two feet in diameter and ground to top dead center is about 25 feet. The last of the attention that I have is a member of pruning dead 18 years ago.
Even the oldest trees are still in production nurseries Marietta. The shelf life of production of an apple orchard is 30 - 40 years.

Another authenticated Johnny Appleseed tree lived until 1944 in the farm cleft 3 miles west of the Fridline farm. Stems were taken from it has been grafted onto a tree at the experimental station to perpetuate the variety.

Johnny Chapman Mass was born in Leominster in 1774 and emigrated to Ohio territory before his family moved to Marietts parents in 1798. He died in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1845.

Memorials to its position near Marietta in Ashland and Mansfield and feet. Wayne. A sister living in Mansfield will associated with that city.

From seed collected Cider factories established nursery in Licking, Ashland and Richland counties. A breeding ground for Walhonding is said to be planted with 16 tons of seeds.

"From all accounts he was an educated man and seems likely to know much about botany." Is said to have preferred to grow seedlings instead of propagating grafting, because his method was more natural. He gave hope and inspiration to many colonists discouraged. Most of all it was a symbol of patience and faith in the future. Your seed can not square with modern ideas of the economy, but encouraged the settlers to believe that it would be a harvest and this was the most important. "" I found a knife in thousands of apples, but it was just a little different feeling when I took a piece of this tree. I guess the quality was not exciting but I remember I was thinking of the guy who planted the tree. "

Carry on the heritage of Johnny Appleseed in your own backyard!
