spilt nailpolish remover on table?

I spilt nail polish remover on my new wooden table last week and sadly i have a light patch in a dark wood table which looks painfully obvious.

It is a dark / very dark brown wooden table with a rustic finish. The patch looks light brown in color and it looks like one coat of wood has been removed from the table and the wood beneath is seen.

I am not sure if the remover has destroyed the Top coat of paint / finish from the table OR if the light brown color is a consequence of the reaction of the nail polish remover and the top layer of the table.

here is a pic of the table:

Its only 2 months old. Any help will be appreadciated. Thanks a lot.

You can get it professionally refinished.

If you want, you can try to refinish it yourself.

Since the table is from India, we can make an educated guess that the finish is shellac (shellac comes from an insect which is native to India).

Since the removed finish resulted in a lighter color, we can make another educated guess that it's orange shellac (as opposed to clear shellac).

Buy a can of "one-pound-cut" orange shellac (one-pound-cut describes the shellac concentration) and some cheesecloth from a hardware store. Ball up some cheesecloth and then wrap that ball with another piece of cheesecloth.

Dip the balled cheesecloth into the shellac and rub it onto the table in quick non-stop ciruclar strokes. Never stop moving the ball. If you need to stop, move the ball in one direction and lift it up while moving like an airplane taking off.

Repeat until the color matches the rest of the table.

Shellac is very forgiving. If you screw up, just do it over. New shellac will dissolve old shellac.

To clean up, use denatured alcohol (available at most hardware stores). Denatured alcohol will eat through shellac, so be careful with it.
