Jungle lodges in general tend to be expensive and the hefty price tag can sometimes deter budget-conscious travelers. If you want to add a trip to the Amazon during your Peru vacation, but don't have a ton of money to spend, these two rustic options in Iquitos are your best bet for a comfortable stay without wreaking havoc on your bank account.
Explornapo Lodge is a no-frills lodge with a friendly atmosphere. Everything is basic and simple, but completely adequate with everything you could need at hand. It has a camp like atmosphere during the day, but at night the lodge is lit with kerosene lanterns that line the walkways and common areas to create a romantic mood. If you are a camper and enjoy being out in nature, you will love this lodge. The tasty meals are buffet style, and drinking water is provided. Each room has comfortable beds with mosquito nets, but is really designed as just a place to sleep. Bathrooms and showers are shared. The toilets are latrine style and the showers do not have hot water.
Explorama Lodge has a similar atmosphere to Explornapo, but has the luxury of private bathrooms, a bar, and a hammock house for lounging around and listening to the sounds of the jungle. It's a little less rustic, a little less isolated, and probably better for people who want an authentic Amazon jungle experience, but aren't used to roughing it.
Both of these lodges provide access to a hanging walkway bridge suspended between the largest trees in the area. The walk allows guests to get an aerial view of the jungle and spot a variety of wildlife that can't be seen from the ground. The lodges also can arrange bird watching, wildlife tours, piranha fishing, skiff tours, and visits into nearby villages. Another great incentive is that there is now a flight from Iquitos to Cusco, which means that for travelers hoping to fit in a Machu Picchu tour as well as an Amazon trip, Iquitos is one of the most convenient options.
