What setup do I need to take Product pictures in my home studio?
I want to take better product shots for my small online business. I have scoured B&H, Adorama, and E-bay for kits and pricing. I shoot with a Nikon D60 and have 1 sb800 flash. What would be the best setup using my existing equipment? I am looking to do this cheap. But I am not afraid to spend some cash. I know what I want the end result to be just not not the setup I want/need to get there. The products(I sell anything you might see or want in a country, ranch, hunting Lodge or Log Cabin style home). The largest products will be 4' wide and about 6' tall.... and the smallest is the size of a quarter. I want professional shots. Someone help me understand what I need. I am leaning toward soft box for my flash, seamless paper. and a strobe to make it white.
You need multiple sources of light so its distributed properly and to reduce shadows. Soft box is a diffuser but you can achieve similar results by bouncing the light rather than pointing it directly at your products. Simple reflectors would also help. You dont need to use expensive studio lights from a photo equipment store. You can use any high wattage lighting but remember to set white balance according to the light source.
This link shows what one person did to set up a photo studio in their garage without breaking the bank. It can be done cheap but you wont get cheap by buying professional photo gear used in professional studios. Just takes a bit of thought.
